Does anyone have any tips/tricks for knowing where to plug +1/-1 in a large table with totals across the y and x axis that contain un-rounded numbers? Every time I fix a row I throw off a column or my check figures to the true data source.

If it’s your data table for presentation. I always doing to the rounding on a separate table that doesn’t need to look pretty, then just simple lookups.

It is a bit annoying, but it fixes this issue

like

Or just cover your arse and have a footnote explaining that due to rounding, totals may not match exactly the sum of numbers on screen.

like

Not sure I understand what you are looking for.

The proper way to round numbers in Excel is by using ROUND(reference, number of digits), but of course rounding the sum of the numbers will not give the same result as summing the rounded numbers. That’s usually ok in most professional settings, although a footnote is good practice.

like

A footnote is best as others have said.

I find that even when dealing with investors, lenders, and other 3rd parties, noone gives a damn if things don't downadd. Which is great, because it's a real pain!

My typical footnote says something like "figures and calculations may not downadd as they are based on underlying data"

No I just made it up

If you had a table of customer experience/satisfaction survey responses for several questions (non-numeric but discrete possible answers, no free text; 1 question per column and 1 responder per row), how would you approach determining significant insights within the data? Excel's "Analyze Data" feature doesn't really suggest things that make sense in the real world. Is there something you would try with correlations somehow, or would you use a non-Excel tool entirely?
