That’s why advertising is 8% black at junior levels and 2.5% at senior level. People get sick of being short-changed. Your feelings are valid and very normal. Not sure going to a new market will help long term.
Do you have an internal champion in the company? Play the networking game.
Thank you for the feedback! I recently gained a Black mentor in the industry, so hoping to see where the mentorship goes.
I 100% resonate with this. Often times I feel overqualified, I’ll do more work with good results and then white counterparts get positive feedback and credit while I’ll receive criticism or be told how I could make it better next time. Sometimes it’s a battle trying to figure out how to articulate differences of opinion with seeming “overly aggressive”. Very much a challenge.
I also find this past year on DEI interesting. I was just hired for a new role, which I later found out that the hiring date was just before their cut off for their internal DEI goals. I helped this huge company make their numbers. Don’t get me wrong, happy for the job, but never felt so used.
Anyways, I’m happy you’ve found a mentor. Work can be hard enough to navigate, but navigating through it as a person of color can make the experience more challenging.
I do. It always feels like managers are saying you are almost there but then nothing happens. So I’m just feel over-qualified in my position or not prepared enough for the next.
I get anxiety/depressed about it. Like maybe the problem is just me.
No, it’s not you at all!
