Anyone ever have an interview that turned combative from the person conducting the interview? Recently did a round of interviews and all the partners were great but the senior counsel interviewed with was awful. I don’t think his questions were wrong but the way they went about asking them (“I’m going to find the truth so don’t lie to me”), cut you off mid-sentence, and then became preachy about how great they were as an attorney.

Red flag 🚩

If it’s a senior associate you’d have to work for in the group, that’d be enough to deter me from accepting any offer, unless I needed a job n

There’s a reason they’re counsel and not a partner…

like

Sure. My personal experience has been that long time counsel disproportionately tend to be overly hostile though. I assume that most of these people are capable of doing the work at a partner level and that tendency toward hostility is why they aren’t partners.

Adding: I asked about how they built teams for work assignments and the person gave a bad sports analogy that made no sense. It seemed like the person didn’t understand coaching or leadership at all.

Agreed, sounds like some of the lackluster senior associates I work with now.

The most? I would have to think about it. But I’ve had everything said to me from my appearance to how women don’t belong in litigation to a million things.

like

Consider if it’s one of those interviews where they try to see how you react under pressure. It’s stupid. But that’s what they do. Steptoe & Johnson used to do that. Not sure if they still do. That’s a stupid interview practice. If I know opposing counsel is being an ass I know how to be an ass. I don’t want to be an ass to my colleague however bad his actions are. But, I still need to get my point across on the issue at play. The way it gets interpreted in the interview summary or whatever is very subjective. Does not tell you anything about the candidate. If an interviewer does that I tell them straight up that I am going to walk out. I don’t have the time for such games.

smart

Had this happen to me recently, was interviewed (2nd round) by a bunch of old incompetent senior counsels. The one partner was the only normal one. One guy was like “what would you do if you upset your client?l 😂😂

Honestly always thought those were they people they kept away from interviewing candidates. At least during summer intern season, these were the people with their door always shut and never at any events.

Need advice and help.

I have realized I grew up in a household where my dad did not treat my mom as an equal. He belittles her, is rude and convinced his way is the only way.

It is painful to say, but some of this shows up in me and in my relationship. I am starting to catch myself, and it to me seems to be more of a reaction than anythjng that is ever intentional.

Wondering if anyone has dealt with something similar, and any success in making changes besides therapy. Cont. in comments

Looking at an Amlaw 100 to lateral in the fall (so trying to anticipate how much of the year I’ll have). I’ll ask what bonus/reporting year but just curious if most follow the same.
