Hi all,
I joined KPMG around 3 months ago but I am not getting work here. Although, I qualified some project's interview, yet due to some internal reason, they considered someone else, and I again came on bench.
I am unable to figure out what can be done now.
Should I start searching work outside.
(I hardly see any job openings these days)
(sap domain)
How's the resource management here?
(do they lagOff?)
Any inputs will be helpful.
Thanks!

How experienced are you? From what I’ve seen and heard from colleagues that escaped ID, the longer you’re in ID, the harder it is to get out of it. Most bigger law firms don’t value ID experience and shifting practice areas is harder the longer you’re practicing (ID aside).
In house oil & gas can be a great launching platform if you want to do corporate work. The industry is a bit volatile, but there’s only a handful of companies that tend to really slash legal when times are bad - those I would avoid if job security is important to you. It will also get you lots of firm contacts if you ever want to go to a law firm corporate practice.
You can start by just doing a google search for the company and layoffs - often articles will indicate which groups are/were impacted. If that isn’t helpful, you can try just searching the company name with “legal” as well. Or see if they often have job openings posted.
Did this come up at all in the interview process at all? When I interviewed to make a move in house it was helpful to see that almost all the lawyers had been at the company for a long time, there wasn’t a lot of turnover. Feel free to shoot me a DM if you’d like. There are definitely some players in the industry known to slash legal and if be happy to confirm if where you’re looking is one of them.
I would be hesitant to go in-house as a first year. If you’re interested in L&E, I’d recommend targeting Littler, Ogletree, Jackson Lewis, or other L&E firms. You might need another year or two of experience first, but you could start networking with those attorneys now. Are you in Houston? If so, go to the HBA L&E section’s holiday party in December, and you should meet some people there.
You would recommend staying in ID for those few years? I don’t want to get stuck.
Thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely be attending.
