Anyone feel like your job sees you as "one of the good ones?" It hasn't explicitly been said, but I'm one of the only Black attorneys at the firm and I think my white colleagues and partners see me as an example of how Black folks "should be" cause I mind my business. Basically I feel like a token, and I don't know how to shift that idea while staying professional.

Yes, and it was the same way in my class at school. I once had a professor say "you're a perfect example of affirmative action at work." Deadass. To my face. White people love to believe that successful Black people must have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps or followed their idea of how to succeed. It's gross

That’s so awful. I’m sorry, friend

You don’t shift the idea. You stay and mind your business or leave. Those are your only two options. Prioritize peace, you don’t owe them or anyone else anything. Let them be ignorant.

Sadly this is true.

Of course they see us the good ones. It’s just a question of if you can and want to make that work for you. It’s not a question of should that be the case because that answer is obviously a resounding no

like

F them. You can’t control what other people think or do. You be you. Be true to yourself and march on

Don't let them affect you. We cannot control how they perceive us. What we can control is how we react.

Oh man. "I feel like a token" hit home. This is the situation I never want to be in again. I feel terrible and miserable. Hang in there!

Move to CA- bigger brown lawyer pool.
Or else stay strong and push on.

I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? Usually it's solo defense attorneys that get extreme with it, but I've seen some questionable stuff from BigLaw too. Hopefully I'm not the only one.

Someone on LinkedIn expressed disappointment about the lack of diversity from the big law firms in TX that were posting pics of their summer associates. A managing partner commented that he thought the post might be about a pic he posted (12/14 SAs were white). He tried to defend this by saying that they had LGBT and socioeconomic diversity. The fact that he recognized that his pic might be part of the problem says it all. Law firms need to do better. Sorry, I just wanted to rant.

Does anyone in this group have ADHD? Are you finding that working in a law firm setting and billing hours is just not something they can do or is it possible with the proper medication and therapy?

I don’t cut my hours, I consistently reach 7 hours a day, but it’s not enough to meet my firm’s minimum requirement. I’m usually working 9 hours/day.

I handleda very difficult and convoluted succession for a black family. My client was astute and intelligent. We got along great. His family was difficult. Willfully ignorant.

Part of the succession dealt with clawing back $450,000 in insurance proceeds that a niece fraudulent received from the decedent by making herself the beneficiary on policies. A separate attorney was hired to handle that part before I was hired to handle all other matters, including settling a $500,000 debt with the...

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
