Anyone have any tips or material on effective storytelling to leadership? I have to present an analysis and recommendation to a VP and really need to put together a good story. Thanks!

Few quick pointers
1. Revise, Revise and Revise the slides again.
2. There shouldnt be anything on the slide that should isn’t necessary or will take more than you are going to spend on it.
3. Each slide should have a clear and explicit message
4. Make it a story so that people are not lost and the transition from each one to next is seamless.
5. Don’t over do on quant side. Usually execs don’t have time to dive into nitty gritty details
6. Be clear about recommendations, impact, plans to implement, potential blockers and next steps

A few thoughts:
1. Write your entire deck out on paper before you make a slide. It can either be a dot-dash or draw out the slides. I prefer dot-dash in a text editor. I’ll specify what graphs I include (scatter plot with x vs y or bar chart showing x) and what the takeaways are.

2. Steal from good graphic artists. I steal from McKinseys articles constantly. McKinsey decks are kinda whatever but their articles are great.

3. Pyramid principle can be helpful for structuring. However I find thinking about it like this easier. We are peeling back an onion. What is the headline analysis? What are the interesting points and how do we peel that back into sub-layers?

4. An easy rhetorical device that I used to work with was the following. And, but, therefore. Basically two high level observations, but this confounding factor throws it into question and therefore we look at x, y, and z.

5. Depending on what you are presenting you might think about the type of slides you want to create. Lots of consulting is more along the lines of a slide doc. If you are actually presenting you might want to consider creating an actual presentation without much text. I don’t personally spend much time on the latter in consulting.

5. Simple graphs are best. I typically use what i would consider a Bain style graph. Grey graphs with color to call out the interesting points.

Duarte has a number of good books on both styles. I’m pretty sure slide docs is a free book.

Keep a library of good decks. I have a few decks from years ago that I consistently refer to. They did a great job laying out analyses so I frequently use them for inspiration.
