My partner works for a very small PE firm. It has its ups and downs - but better for him than working in industry as he is quite entrepreneurial.
It largely comes down to liking and respecting the people you work with.
Regarding the ups and downs, when making investments, no matter how much diligence, losses can happen. Whether it’s the wrong team or bad market luck or unforseen circumstances - like a CEO dies suddenly revealing a litany of bad deals in his wake - (happened) . Or there can be upside surprises, although rare.
That said, the job can be very interesting especially to the quantitatively inclined.
Started my consulting career at boutique firms - from my observation, they don’t have the infrastructure to train recent grads into consultants. But once you’re past staff, it’s a great place to be
My husband has worked for a boutique PE firm based in NYC for 3 years. He likes the challenges but has not got a bonus, raise, or promotion since he started. He’s work life balance imo is shit and the money isn’t worth it. He’d travels constantly too. He’d make a lot more with growth opportunities if he left and joined the big 4 with his skills. I’m biased obviously bc I think his company takes advantage of him
