I took the UBE 3 years after taking and passing a state specific exam first time right after law school. It was definitely easier the second time around, even though I had forgotten practically everything about the bar topics - it comes back easily.
Thanks! Yeah it’s coming back pretty well. I’m mainly just worried that I’m over confident this time haha
Easier the second time around but don’t underestimate the importance of state specific topics that weren’t on your original exam.
Thankfully they’re both UBE states so it’s the exact same test.
Nothing to be nervous about. If you can pass once, you can absolutely pass a second time. You'll need to put in just as much work though (i.e. sign up for a bar prep course or do w/e worked for you the first time around). Hopefully you're able to take at least 4-6 weeks off from work to concentrate on studying full time. If you're able to, I'd also suggest putting in at least 15 hours in the couple months while you're working. It will pay off immensely.
Thanks! I’ve taken the Barbri course both times and doing more this time than last time due to not being fresh on the material. Mostly concerned that I’m over confident this time due to my score the first time.
You’re so close to just waiving in… can’t put the move off a year?
No, I actually moved last April and I’m taking the bar in two weeks. I looked at a checklist on the state bar admissions for what I needed to do to waive in before I moved and “have 5 years of experience” wasn’t on that list. It’s my own fault for not looking more into it, but the state I was in had reciprocity and didn’t have provisions requiring certain years of experience.
Can you waive into dc bar and then use dc bar to waive into current state?
But I had to take the California bar exam 2 years after passing in state 1. Used Kaplan (got a huge discount from previous Kaplan rep in state 1). I studied the same (if not harder) for my second bar knowing how difficult California bar is.
Good luck! Passing bar 1 did give me confidence that I could do it, but I felt like I had to study with the same intensity to pass California’s bar. I probably overdid it, but I passed it on the first try so I guess it worked lol. Am never taking another bar ever again though
I took CA 4 years after taking NY and also had to take the full 2 days rather than 1 day because I was about 6 months from having practiced long enough for the attorneys exam. It was definitely easier second time around but absolutely do no assume that means you don’t have to take much time off to study. Highly recommend taking 4-6 weeks and doing Barbri again. Anything less than 4 weeks just isn’t enough. You can do it!!
Thanks for posting this because I’m about to do the same thing and take the UBE in another state.
Hate how states will not respect those who clerk as not practicing.
I took two bars two years apart like riding a bike you’re already an attorney so no sweat.
It was hard to study bc you’ve done it before I worked full time while I did it so it can be done!!! Best of luck’
