My friend is a 4th year public defender in NYC. T14 grad and easily one of the smartest, most capable attorneys and professionals I know. He finally hit the limit and is looking to pivot out of PD work when she moves to Oregon next year. Does anyone have any experience seeing this PD - private practice transition happen? Looking for an entry level non exempt positions. I've been in and out of both food service and retail for years. I know what I'm worth and I know how strong my work ethic is. I do not enjoy having carrots dangling out of reach, preventing me from furthering my career. Seems all this 20 something year olds are getting what I feel I do deserve (no ego). I’ve been negotiating a settlement on behalf of a client. OP is a major corp. we’ve gone back and forth for months, almost a year. Finally came to a final agreement and we’re reviewing for final signature. Then client is reviewing and decides they want something else modified. It’s a point of contention. OP has said no. Should I communicate this to client before pushing back against OP’s rejection of the mod?

Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. Plus outlook does weird things sometimes like combines conversations so I only see most recent sent item in that convo. Alternatively, do you have a good way confirming you caught all of your email time?

Tips for becoming more independent as you progress from junior to midlevel? I am starting to be put into the position of just having to handle things including drafting and could use some advice from others.

I know my firm wouldn’t ever let me actually represent someone as an RE agent, so then I’m wondering if there’s really any value to me getting a license?

I am sure this is a question with an obvious answer, but does anyone else just feel absolutely trapped in a job they hate because of their student loans? I’m three years out of law school and I still have $160K in student debt despite making aggressive payments. I work in a larger firm (not big law per se, but 250+ attorneys and big for the market). I am pretty unhappy with my job the vast majority of the time, but I feel like I have no options. $160k at 6% and 7% interest cannot be ignored.

Do any of you have side-jobs or maybe hobbies that you make money from? Alternatively, what do you think sounds like a good one to look into?

I am a 25-year-old first year associate fresh out of law school at a small civil litigation firm. I went to a good law school and work hard. I’ve been in this position for about 5 months now and I keep messing up. Losing track of tasks. I have never felt dumber. Any advice? Should I be doing better at this point? I’m a licensed attorney!! Is this normal?

Motions
I work in a midsize firm and we have the basic subscription to westlaw, which doesn’t include the ability to see filed briefs, motions, etc without incurring additional costs. I’m wondering if there is a service in the NJ/PA area that gives you access to previously filed motions and briefs? So if I’m drafting a summary judgment I could search the service and find a similar one. If this doesn’t exist.. I think I found the next million dollar idea lol

Any recommendations on relocating to Hawaii? I am registered for the Hawaii bar but currently based out of Los Angeles and practicing in California as a licensed attorney.

I seem to go through this cycle where I'll try to fix a problem, fix it and then go back to my old ways. I'm trying to fight against it but basically my performance review is coming up and I think it's likely I'm going to be let go because of my failure to meet expectations. Earlier in the year I was going through a rough time and working through it, I have gotten better over the course of the year but I feel it's not enough. I got fired from my last job. I’m at a midsize firm in the Midwest and I’ve noticed that we’ve hired multiple associates who all graduated law school the same year. Some are coming from clerkships, other firms, etc., but they’re all on the same graduation year. This feels like it’s setting up a squeeze down the road for these folks with respect to partnership. Is there something I’m missing or is this something that will cause issues down the road?
