I've been on a PIP twice. One I survived, one I didn't.
I think managers intent plays a part.
The first time I think my manager wanted to see me succeed. I just hated the job and half assed it. The goals were reasonable and I just hit them. I came off the PIP, was promoted a year later and stayed with the company 5 years.
The next time, the manager and I bumped heads. Training had been nearly non existent. Each time I met a requirement at one check-in point, it suddenly changed or something else was added . So I was not.meant to survive that one.
You're definitely not doomed. They exist for a reason, to help you get better. If you were doomed, they would just fire you. Take it as a learning opportunity and an opportunity to really show yourself.

i was once. got off in 6 weeks,
I was on one and survived so you are not doomed. I won't lie to you it is ALOT of work to get off a PIP but its deifnitely doable if you really want to stay.
