There is a great fake airport in San Bernardino I shot there 2 to 3 years ago not sure if it’s still around but it was huge.

It’s very hard to get permission and if you do there will be restrictions. Your best bets will be a no longer operational airport, virtual or set. 2 cents.

EP1 hit it on the head. There are just too many restrictions in shooting at any airport. Virtual LED set is the way to go.
Depends on the type of shots you need but consider Mexico City. We created an “airport terminal” at a convention center there and replaced the windows in post
This is a great idea -- many modern public facility / spaces can double as an airport terminal if dressed properly. Even colleges have communal areas worth scouting for this. I think if you build a good flight-status board with LED screens or even as a post / grfx composite it can really sell a lot of spaces as an airport terminal, if shot sizes / framing complies.
We got lucky and found a part of the Miami airport that wasn’t being used. But agree with what everyone has said. If you aren’t working with a brand that can help with airport access, you’re probably best to recreate it somewhere else.
I've shot in Ontario, CA and they had a closed terminal which worked great. We worked with the flight ops team to get the shotmaker onto the runway. They were great. I've shot Long Beach and their vintage terminal building for a period - styled commercial that spoofed Casablanca. Basically we worked overnights, on two consecutive nights. They too were great. I've shot in LAX in Terminal 5 and paid substantial location fees both to airport ops and to Delta who leased the gates although the gates we used were non-operational.
I shot something for an airline at JFK. The client connected us directly with the JFK team to coordinate logistics, but even with their help it was still challenging. They told us to budget 2hrs to get all of the EQ through the security check - it took 4hrs. And that was just one of the challenges we encountered that day.
I shot at a small regional before, and they were very strict on not having cameras anywhere near the TSA area. I feel like it’s kinda obvious, but you have to really be careful or they get upset.
Smaller airports will likely be the easier to navigate & accomplish what you need over larger ones.
We shot in an airport but it was an airport Amex lounge, the Amex client helped us with security. But it was only a 3 person crew and it was only the lounge.
Otherwise yeah, set or virtual.
I did this in Uruguay. Don’t recommend it unless it’s only 2 or 3 shots.
