I miss the Friday evening post. :-(
Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?
Product Management at a large bank vs Business Analytics/S&O for FAANG? Recently started in the former role, but have interview calls for the latter just come up in my mailbox. Similar comp when adjusted for the different job locations. Can anyone help me with the Pros and Cons please. I know the roles are different, and so are the industries, need to understand difference career paths and difference in corporate cultures. JPMorgan Chase Google LinkedIn Citi

Cool job offer for AD

Saturday night live is getting good again.
What agency did the Absolut campaign?
Dear recruiter who said you’d get back to me ASAP:

I was actually on set recently doing an ad for a transit agency and one of the site foremen told me he used to be a creative at BBDO in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Acknowledged it was a lot of drug-fuelled fun but also said that people who work in the ad industry are crazy and you couldn’t pay him to do it over.
My Doctor’s brother is in the pipefitters union. They did the math and when you factor in student loans, hours worked, and time spent with continuing education his brother makes more money per hour. And will retire younger. And with a pension.
They both own boats, but he said his brother has time to use his haha.
It depends on your role in advertising vs where you live in us for trades. The pay curve in advertising USED to be you start out making minimal but by the time you’re retiring you’re making a lot (200k+) unfortunately digital shops FD this up by way undercutting large trad agencies. After that started in 2005 or so, salaries have been basically flat and stagnant. Mainly because side the largest expenditure in advertising is SEO. Companies put over 30% of overall marketing budget behind SEO. Now there are somethings trades outright lie about. First you must go to trade school which can be up to two years and isn’t cheap usually around 30k. When you come out of trade school you must apprentice for three-six years before being licensed as a tradesman. During this time you are making an hourly rate of somewhere from $15-30/hr. When you are fully licensed you can be independent or part of a union. Independent get paid more per hour but have to find their own customers. Union is steadier and you usually can find consistent work but because of dues you make less than independents. In the end the avg licensed electrician makes around $65k. Of course unions claim it’s $86k. Either way is solid money but not great money. Guys who make a lot own companies that employ multiple tradesmen.

Electricians make more than that. And city workers make $80-100 at mid levels. Those aren’t even SKILLED LABOR jobs. Then they retire after 20 years and get a similar job with the county - so when they retire they are collecting two pensions. Not a bad deal.
President of our former agency went on to a CEO position and after a year started his own trucking logistics company.
Rising Star
Most of the people I know who have left advertising went into real estate.
I’m going back to school to learn coding-so done with the industry
Other AI
People I know who have gone on: an art director who became a wood worker … a senior producer is now a fitness instructor … another art director is a life coach … an account director started her own vegan wine club company … a copywriter is an interior designer … a graphic designer works in the movie industry in Orlando … a creative director is an influencer … a copywriter is an artist … another copywriter is in construction … a media guy is a stay at home dad … a graphic designer is a stay at home mom …
I think they’re all happier, with or without a comparable paycheck because they’re doing what they love. Not that they didn’t LIKE advertising and what they did — it just wasn’t their passion.
I think if people decide to leave the grind for a trade, it should be their passion or they’re going to have a lot of the same complaints.

Thanks, but tbh it sounded like a stretch. So I asked my ‘friend’ about it and now consider myself educated!
Why Some Wine Isn’t Vegan:
Fining agents are substances used to clarify wine, remove sediment, and adjust flavors. Some traditional fining agents are derived from animals, such as:
• Isinglass (from fish bladders)
• Gelatin (from animal collagen)
• Egg whites (albumin)
• Casein (a milk protein)
These agents bind to unwanted particles and help remove them from the wine. Even though they’re mostly filtered out before bottling, their use means the wine isn’t considered vegan by many standards.
What Makes a Wine Vegan?
Vegan wines use either:
• No fining agents (unfined wines — these may be a bit cloudier but are completely natural)
• Vegan-friendly fining agents, such as:
• Bentonite (a type of clay)
• Activated charcoal
• Pea protein
Is It Just a Marketing Ploy?
Not really. For ethical vegans and people with dietary restrictions or allergies, it’s a meaningful distinction. However, the rise of vegan labeling on wine can sometimes be used to appeal to a broader market — especially since the winemaking process isn’t usually transparent to consumers.
Not a trade but I pulled the ripcord and am now in medical school.

After a successful agency career, me and my wife have a dog/pet concierge business. I will gladly pick up dog 💩 all day long versus taking client bull 💩 at this stage in my life. I have no idea where agency life is headed but it sure as heck looks to be a bumpy ride during this AI transition.
Have family members in the trades, so we’ve swapped stories.
Trades can be really hard on your body and, if you have bad luck, the accumulated damage may force you to retire way earlier than planned. There’s also plenty of accident risk, exposure to harmful chemicals, and overall unhealthy lifestyle.
There’s also plenty big bucks usually don’t roll in until you have your own crew/company which has its own stressors.

Thanks. Though that second paragraph could have been written about advertising.
