I think there will be a reasonably sized promotion wave in the EU which may temper this to some degree, but there is definitely a risk of people moving off if they feel undervalued. There is a question mark as to where they would move to though, as it’s not like other consulting firms have had a great year either.
That being said, I don’t believe the number of starting analysts are going to cause a massive shock to projects (think 15-20 EU starters). That’s generally 1 new person per project and that should almost be the expectation of a project that someone is pretty green in some sense (topic area, workstream etc.). Keeping in mind, right now our staffing pool is probably the most experienced overall than it has ever been given the activities of the last 12 months (those that are here have all been here for a reasonable amount of time and have been staffed throughout).
As long as staffing takes that into account and balances it out (which is the staffing approach in the EU) then it should be ok. The US dealt with a harder staffing situation over the Covid period where the team size practically doubled in a year and the teams were basically always at least 50% new starters (some experienced hires, but often still ramping up to our way of working).
Well I guess not anymore
Where will people leave to? Tech has been a blood bath and it sounds like most other consulting firms have had similar issues (unless you consider cost restructuring firms like A&M or FTI).
Seems like overall job satisfaction is lower and could be some ‘pent up demand’ to leave, partially opening a flood gate when other options do arise
Do you get the sense people are ready to leave? Is this specific to the Americas EU or APAC?
I feel like leaving a firm because the economy isn't great in the US, and interest rates are extremely high (leading to low volume of DDs) is not the best reason. They are very much external factors affecting the industry as a whole. From everything I see bonuses are going to be bad at all firms so jumping ship is really just going to be a lot more effort.
I think what a lot of people are missing is that AS was impacted more by the economy than other firms. AS is focused on TMT, which are the areas hardest hit. Other companies work on FS and gov projects as well, which didn’t get impacted the same way.
