Apparently “good attitude” at work means smiling while doing the job of 3 people, never complaining, and pretending the mandatory overtime is a fun challenge.

When did “attitude” become code for “don’t question anything”?

Probably when the job market tanked and companies realized how desperate everyone is to either find or maintain employment. It's a lot easier to squeeze every last bit of productivity out of your employees when they don't have any better options available.

since they stopped executing/killing people for every little thing

Not sure! It is hitting me hard though. Not only do I have multiple hats to wear now, the people that have less to do are still making silly mistakes that I then have to fix. That is one of my biggest issues right now and it is wearing on me more than anything else, and there is a lot!!

I relate to this and its so annoying!

That standard was set decades ago when the workforce would work all hours of the day without complaint. Now as CEOs and managers are older but still have that same mindset, they expect all of us younger generation workers to do the same but no more benefits, no better pay and minimal PTO.

The best attitude is to have no attitude. Don't force a fake smile and pretend everything is rainbows and unicorns. Don't spend all day with a scowl on your face or muttering under your breath. Don't focus on the negative; focus on doing your job. I tell myself, and others, that this company pays my salary, but I don't work FOR this company. I work FOR the people who buy what I'm selling. I earn my paycheck FOR my family. I work because I need to AND because I want to. It would be nice every day was filled with sunshine and singing birds. It would be nice if my coworkers weren't backstabbing POSs. It would be nice if the department manager would divorce the CEO's daughter so we might actually get a manager who can lead and improve our performance instead of only speaking in negatives. Well dearhearts, this old world isn't "nice." My 8-year-old son heard me complaining to my wife about several things at work. He said, "Daddy, I'm sad that you're unhappy but if everything was always good it would get kinda boring." He's probably right. Sometime it feels like I'm stabbing myself in the leg just to prove to myself I'm still alive, but proof is proof.

This comment is certainly an eye opener especially just from the perspective of your son!

What you are describing is the excitement of 19th century scientists, always curious to hear the thump of a treasure chest.

Anyone with bad experiences with ex-biglaw inhouse counsel?

I get the impression that many are biglaw haters. With some, any attempt at being service minded and asking "have you thought about X, we can help" makes them whine about scope and costs.

One GC I worked with even had on their resume (OP wanted resumes of key employees) as one of their skills "maximizing value of internal and external legal advice while minimizing cost"
