Anyone with bad experiences with ex-biglaw inhouse counsel?

I get the impression that many are biglaw haters. With some, any attempt at being service minded and asking "have you thought about X, we can help" makes them whine about scope and costs.

One GC I worked with even had on their resume (OP wanted resumes of key employees) as one of their skills "maximizing value of internal and external legal advice while minimizing cost"

I mean it is part of the job. Bringing costs in-house to reduce overall legal spend is a huge part of why in-house counsel get hired, does not surprise me that’s on a resume. When biglaw sends in a bill that’s $100k higher than the business people expected, it falls on the in-house lawyer to either justify it or negotiate it down. There’s always complicated extra nuances in the law and in-house counsel have to decide if those are worth the extra money of investigating or not worth it given the overall context of the matter. As outside counsel you’re providing a service for money, your job (and incentive) is to sell more services, their job is to decide whether that’s a value add proposition for their company. Just like when you go to BestBuy or wherever they try and upsell you on their extended warranties and geek squad subscription etc and you don’t always jump up and down in joy to hand over your limited money even though getting insurance in case of worst case scenarios might be a good idea. Sounds like these folks are just doing their jobs.

(This is part of why I get frustrated with people’s endless rose-colored glasses about going in-house… there’s some very different stresses.)

Ya, C1. You just sent a shiver down my spine re the rose colored glasses of in-house

I wouldn’t say they hate biglaw but anyone who’s spent any meaningful time there knows it’s far from a model of efficiency. They believe (with more than a little support) that biglaw firms do an awful lot of unnecessary work on cases. Maximizing value while minimizing cost sounds like a core function of a good GC.

Hiring managers: How is the interview process like at your company and how much say do you have when it comes to choosing that candidate?

I’m wondering how much influence the first manager has since I’m not sure what he’s writing
