Ok be honest, candidates. I really love this set of questions, I’ve been considering shifting my current interview style to these questions - I think they really give you an idea of who this person would be within the work setting. But the questions almost feel too deep for a recruiter to ask. What would you think if a recruiter took a different path and asked these questions instead of the usual ones?

I'm at a boutique run by a tyrant. He compares himself to Stalin. Big law is what it is, but at least there is some structure to protect you.
Really depends on the firm. I went to a boutique firm and it was living hell. It was two former big law partners and I’m pretty sure they split off from BL because they were told they couldn’t treat associates and staff like s**t anymore. So, they formed their own firm where they could act like it was still the ‘80s. Yelling, telling us we were “beneath” them, demanding we work weekends even when there really wasn’t work to be done, and they would go home at 8pm but require us to stay all night while they called from home to scream about edits to drafts.
The tension in the office was ridiculous because it was a small space, there was 9 of us and no where to go to get away from the partners. There was no one else to moderate their behavior. At least at a BL firm you can try to work with other partners or get the management committee to try and address the behavior.
I guess just make sure you do your research on the firm.
Omg I forgot these boomers even existed.
I'm former Big Law. Wish I'd never left. If you want a Big Law referral, happy to pass along your resume (city dependent).
A referral would be super helpful
WLB is typically better, less hours worked most holiday and weekends you won’t be bothered unless something urgent is happening. You typically get the opportunity to work on things partners at biglaw jog up (conducting your own deps, going to trial sooner) of course this all depends on the firm but you’re more likely to get these opportunities at a boutique versus biglaw

As you know, many boutiques are formed by former BL partners. I’d say start big law and you can lateral.
I’m at a boutique with several big law offers in hand. I was at BL before. I hate to be cliche: It depends on your boss and your practice group. Choose based on your boss. Not the firm.
I’m at a litigation boutique and would really recommend it. I get the same salary as big law, but I get way more responsibility and more opportunities. For example, when I go to trial, I take witnesses, end of story, even when I was a junior associate. I’ve also done dozens of depositions, and I have some big law friends that haven’t taken a single one. I also am way more likely to make partner. Now that I’m more senior, most of my big law litigation friends are going in house because they don’t think they can make partner. But I’m fairly confident that I’ll make partner here. So TLDR: same salary, same hours, more trial work and opportunities, better chance of making partner.
That’s so weird to me. Yes, my firm makes partners regularly, as did the previous litigation boutique I worked at.
Unpopular opinion: boutique firm life is much more stressful. So many less resources (human and technological) which makes everything less efficient. I was often the only associate on my matters (some of which were huge class actions) and I felt so much more pressure because there was nobody but me to do the work. Also, I billed relatively the same amount as I do now (give or take 50 hours a year) and made 60% less. Think about it long & hard for sure! Easy to fall into the trap of thinking work-life balance will be much better when for me, it was the exact opposite.
