Hi Google - I am requesting guidance!
I am prepping for my interview specifically GCA and open ended questions. I struggle to tell if the outcome should be talking through your process/steps (maybe for a question like - how would you go about determining program complexity) vs a specific solution such as create x new product, for x market by x date based on my assumptions. Is the desired outcome something I can clarify with the interviewer?
So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

Be honest, but put yourself in their shoes. It might be a long time to be out of the saddle and they have a business to run, right? But, it also makes you human. Make sure your stories and lessons learned are sharp. The sharper you can tell that story, the easier it is for them to see you still have it. These skills don’t go away, but they want to make sure you are still warm enough to do the job.
You can also spin this to your advantage. Shows them you know how to prioritize. Use the caregiver period as an example of problem solving, perseverance, etc. I’ve seen some crazy stories be spun into great things. Put this story into chatgpt and ask it to spin it as a positive experience and start seeing the angles you can take. I don’t see this as a huge downside, but it can be one because the immediate reaction is you are out of the game. Take control of YOUR narrative.
At the end of the day, a huge part of this role is to turn a murky picture into one of rainbows and unicorns. Let’s see if you have what it takes. Hope all is well with your family now, you are stronger for it.
That’s a great tee up for yourself. Congrats and I’m glad you came back to update us. Great news! Onward, my friend. Proud of you.
