Not drying up. Bar is higher. Demand for jobs < supply of labor. It’s employers market right now.
Yeah, I feel like there are roles I looked at before that asked for 5 YOE. Now I have that and those same roles are asking for 8.
Anyone and everyone who studied anything remotely STEM and wanted money moved into tech. The market is saturated, but the jobs are still there.
Bar is higher because there is greater competition
I think the bar is getting higher than it was in the last few years, especially since COVID.
I was in consulting for 6 years and now I’m moving to tech.
Tech jobs have been "drying up" for a while. Large (and medium) firms have been offshoring/outsourcing (usually both) more and more aggressively. Transition to Cloud accelerated the pace. Free (i.e. 0% interest) money masked this for a while, as there was a "war for talent" by startups with no product/business plan, with investors willing to bankroll the most ridiculous ideas (since the alternative for most was "safe" investments with 1.2% APY). Now many of the startups went under, and large corporates have a new "nearshoring" strategy- LatAm, where the time zones are more aligned, and the market is not sd saturated as in India so you can actually find decent talent.
Yes, lots more competition for full-time employment. Some companies are clearly cutting back. Many companies are using contractors or off-shoring outside the USA (entire dev teams and product managers). You can tell by looking at the company's website at all jobs and their locations. If you want to get back to work, contract jobs are a much different market because it's hard to work without paid time off and no or extremely little benefits. On the other hand...contract jobs open up doors and let you try new things with less risk. Pick your battles, and keep searching for the right company where you can network your way in if they hire others like you.
Seems like less opportunities, the pay rate is lower for highly experienced individuals, and companies are becoming way too specific in their demands.
it's the way too specific bit that's killing me - I'd take a paycut at this rate just to get out of my current company
Bar is higher, Ai is changing industries
Don't know. But I'm following this thread because I'm leaving the military and want to hear opinions about the tech job market.
