Are thank you notes a thing anymore? I’m interviewing people for internships (juniors in college that would ideally convert to full time a year later)… and none of them send thank you notes. I’m only 7 years out of college so I didn’t think that much had changed since I was in school but maybe I’m off here…

I always appreciate a thank you note. It lets me know you’re serious

💯 - and that you have some courage to do things that aren’t necessary but make a difference

I swear no one writes thank you notes anymore! Call me old school, but it’s a great way to show initiative and genuine interest in a role. I interviewed for a role on my team earlier this year and only received a couple emails.

Call me old school and I’m not even in my 30s…

Agree it shows both of those qualities but even if you’re not interested it is polite to thank people for their time. I feel like everyone knows everyone now (at least in my industry) and you don’t want to have a bad reputation out there.

This is a generation now where disposable communication is the norm. By disposable I mean low emotional and/or intellectual investment. They would likely think you caring about a thank you note is weird. No criticism of them. It’s just the world we live in now.

I get thank you notes for business school applicants for full time. I appreciate more that they show appreciation for the time time spent (usually doing coffee chats) but if someone was overall engaged and qualified, I don’t consider it an expectation or something to tip the scales, all else being equal.

Sure, but all of that ambition and differentiation should come through in the interactions, not just a thank you note. It’s a cherry on top of a good candidate, a nice to have but not much of a needle-mover.

ARE thank you notes a thing anymore? I'm also curious because I think about sending one then I get nervous that maybe it will be seen as "too much" or "weird". Age 25-30

I am 33 and have worked in the Food and I have never heard of this or done it, however in any other field I would 100% do this. I think its a great way to set yourself apart, show gratitude and your personality in what you say and the design of the thank you card. I would love this as an employee, if someone thinks it is weird or too much then they probably suck as an employer

I won’t hire someone without a follow up - but I’m in sales and need to know you’re going to follow up with clients.

I’m mid-40s, so I’m one of those elder millennials.

If it was an interview for a job or school - yes I do. But if it is an intro call with a recruiter, it’s 50/50 for me. If it is a worthwhile (someone who at least attempts to have a conversation) recruiter, I’ll send one.

I will say, sending a digital thank you note does make you stand out since most aren’t sending them any more.

If sending a thank you note is as rare as the guy who drops off his resume in a box of donuts… then I’ll do the thank yous.

like

Yeah I don’t usually with recruiters, but with the team I’d be working on / folks I’d collaborate with I do.

I’m part of the hiring team in this scenario and I usually do that with hiring teams when I’m interviewing. I’ll probably keep doing it because I do think it helps.

Thank you notes aren't common, but I'll give someone higher credit if they send one. The follow-up and getting our email information shows promise in a PM role.

like

I don’t send them unless the recruiter advises me to send them for some reason.

Can I ask what industry you work in? And how old you are (range is fine)

Yes

I’m looking for a new job and have found that small companies send me rejections quickly and the huge companies are the only ones giving me a chance. I thought it would be the other way around. I really just want a new job and I think I’ll have more luck passing the interviews for smaller companies than the big ones. Any recommendations on how to make myself more appealing to smaller companies? Thank you I need a new job ASAP :(

Unfortunately, this position has now been filled."

Why do they then keep sending that these jobs might fit your interest?
