AWS cloud application architect. Had an on-site interview with AWS a few days ago and just got an email saying they want to talk to me about next steps. The role is cloud application architect but I want to ask them about the senior cloud application architect role. I have all the relevant experience for that role and feel like I’d be a better fit for that senior role. How should I approach this conversation? Is this even possible? Amazon

Smaller companies might be looking for more experience or might have less ability to train than a big company. Your résumé may read high potential low experience.
Without looking at your résumé it’s hard to tell but smaller companies tend to need people to have experience in more areas and have less ability to onboard and train. A smaller company might also reject you quickly if your salary expectation is outside of their pay range.
If you are looking for fully remote, make sure the company is really ok with this. A company will need to come to this decision beforehand. It’s a mind shift which many small companies can’t handle. Even a company that advertises remote might still give preference to local candidates.
I hope that didn’t come across stuck up. Obviously feeling blessed that the big companies are responding. I just don’t want ONLY bus companies responding since those tech interviews are brutal :(

My series C company has a few engineering jobs here. It’s a great remote first environment.

I recently changed jobs and did take less to move into a culture that was more in line with me. I never mentioned salary and I could see they were concerned I was out of range. They did followup with an email confirming the range of the position I was interviewing for. I responded stating any offer above x would be considered. It my honest bottom that was in their range. They never asked what I was making now at the time. Furthermore they asked again later in the process, it was clear they liked me but were concerned. That time I reiterated the same thing as before and also clarified that there are more important things than starting salary and would be excited for an opportunity to join the team. They offered right at my bottom, and I took it. They may not know I took less, but I’m very satisfied and I think they like me too. Know you bottom dollar and you can spin the conversation of they ask what you are making now to be about the minimum you are willing take. Don’t sell yourself short, but know your amount, and be honest with yourself on that, make sure its the right fit for you. I want out from where I was, but I wanted the right fit, not just the same mess somewhere else. If you aren’t getting call backs make sure you have a great cover letter, I never reuse and have mine personalized for any application, google: the cover letter that got me the job. Your cover letter should be a form letter in my opinion, not saying yours is :)
I’ve had a similar experience. Got an interview with Google and Bloomberg but small companies reject me all day
Thanks

What makes you think you wouldn't be successful during interviews for the larger companies?
I haven’t studied enough and there isn’t enough time for me to study to a point where I will feel prepared. Same goes for smaller companies, I just haven’t experienced one before so I don’t know if it’s just as difficult
