Nothing like this. I can't imagine having the audacity to not pay you and then run the copy anyway. I would be livid. I hope you reached out demanding payment the second you saw the piece published.
I would have been livid too. Using your work without paying is theft, plain and simple.
Thank you for sharing this experience. That is terrible. I’m sorry that happened to you btw. Yes, I heard that this is definitely common. Was there any type of formal agreement? From now on, if you haven’t already keep proof of work, take screenshots, and maybe possible partial upfront payment. It’s crazy that they are even allowed to do things like that enough times, making it not even rare.
That’s solid advice. Proof and upfront agreements are the only shield we have sometimes. It should not be this way, but sadly it often is.
I have pitched so many things, some really personal angles on films, books and TV only to find them stolen. I sometimes suspect pitch calls are only done when editors are out of ideas internally.
I’ve had the same suspicion about pitch calls. It feels exploitative when ideas magically appear elsewhere after being “rejected.”
Yes, and it is the most infuriating feeling. I once built out a full proposal deck that was “rejected,” only to see the client use the exact framework a month later. No credit, no fee. It really makes you rethink who you work with.
That would drive me mad. Doing all the legwork just to see it lifted later is such a betrayal of trust.
Screenshot everything and keep a record of all emails sent out. If they do go ahead and use your concept word-for-word, without payment, said all related documents to the editors boss and a copy of the plagiarism laws in your country. You might still not get paid but at least you called out the editor. Of course, you might not get any more work at that company but do you want to work for a company that employs editors that basically steal from people?
At some point, calling it out is better than staying silent. Even if you lose the client, at least you don’t enable the behaviour.
Did you send them an invoice once you saw it?
Was it recent? You still could...
Sadly, I have seen people say something like this so many times.
Sad but true. The fact that this is common says everything about how broken the system is.
Can you sue??? Did you sign a contract?
