As a new college grad, how do I leverage my skills? It seems like nowadays, a college degree doesn’t really help you get jobs. So what can I do to learn fast and get a job fast if I am struggling? Thanks

Did you do any internships or volunteering while you were in college? What kind of experience have you go so far?

like

I have full time work experience during the summers, mostly summer camp counselor and childcare. I also volunteered for multiple schools and environmental causes, led a club, had a community outreach internship for an environmental nonprofit and worked part time at a cafe during the school year. I studied environmental studies and mostly focus on people-focused or public-facing roles since I seem to have the most success getting work there, but after I graduated I struggle to find jobs that don’t have an insane turnover rate. Someone said that networking seems to matter more than actual experience/achievements but I just want a role where I am able to use my organization and communication skills that I used in my last jobs. It just seems like companies aren’t really hiring new grads unless I’m looking in the wrong places? I also use LinkedIn a ton.

There are a few key things you can do. If it's getting the interview, you have to optimize your resume with keywords because AI is looking at almost every resume. Looking for keywords, past that I would agree with other commenters who suggest doing volunteer work or internships that would put you ahead of the pack as far as college graduates. It's a tough market and there's a different job market than when I started out, but I wish you all the best.

To clarify, I already got my degree. The hard part has weirdly been finding a job after I already completed it. I don’t think it’s the economy so I am confused lol

I would honestly be networking and trying to get referrals. There isn't much you can leverage when you don't have experience. Sometimes a referral can give you the leverage you need to get your foot in the door.

This is a great piece of advice. Thank you!

Don't take this the wrong way, but as a new grad, you don't have any skills! You've got to SHOW what you know.

Employers often look for practical experience alongside a degree. Volunteering, internships, certifications, or short specialised courses can help demonstrate applied skills quickly.

So I had been working as medical interpreter up to the early part of this year. Today, during an interview, the Director with whom I was interviewing genuinely urged me to consider pursuing a career as a PA or even attempt to go to medical school. I had considered it in passing before but today was about the third or fourth time that someone had earnestly nudged me in that direction. Has anyone here made such a career pivot before? I love working in healthcare, there’s nothing like it.
