I got my 11 year old a phone at the beginning of this year as she was starting middle school. I got my 8 year old a Gabb watch that has call and text capability for up to like 20 preprogrammed numbers. Use it mostly to coordinate pickups at school and from her moms house.
Our oldest got his at 11 when he was in middle school. I got him a Verizon prepaid for $200 and put him on the basic plan.
I use the Qustodio app for monitoring and limiting usage. It's not the best or the worst and reasonably priced. I use Life360 for tracking location.
It depends never got ours because we always picked them up or they called from school. Phone can be a real distraction for them but also a safety asset if the kid is a walker or spends time alone.
Daughter is 11 and has a phone that only works on Wi-Fi. She is not allowed to bring it to school. She also has an Apple Watch with a plan that allows her to call or text (and I can locate her).
Mine will get hers next year either at the start of school or December when she turns 13. There will be restrictions and limitations, like no phone in her room. No Snapchat etc
8 year old - got her an Apple Watch (we use it as a tracker, she uses it for fitness - competes with me and my wife, calls me when I'm on travel, sends me Memojis). We tried the AirTags - they were useless.
4 kids here. Got them used phones when they started middle school (6th grade/11yo here). #3 started middle earlier in fall. Didn't seem like they needed them beforehand and we went for used phones ~$200 to reduce all around risk: if they lose/break it or if somebody tries to steal it. I worry about anyone marching around with a $1k phone, esp my kids.
