Much cooler pre bschool experience than staying at BCG.
As someone who is now a VP at a mega fund, I would always tell people in consulting - think about what you like at your current role, and see if the new role will have the things you like and more.
In terms of timing, my sense is that you’re not too early, but definitely a little early. If you enjoy consulting and I were you, I’d stay for a few more years, lead some teams before moving.
For an LMM fund (which might not have much of a brand), the upside of PE ops is mostly the comp, which really shines through at more senior levels.
All in all, I think experience at MBB for 2-4 more years (with some experience managing teams and interacting with senior clients), is far more useful experience for you career wise than an early move to an LMM fund.
Could I jump on the back of this? I’m at a T2 consulting firm with 5 years experience. Received a job offer at a LMM PE for ops. However comp is £150k (vs. £120k in consulting, though my consulting comp is expected to go to £140k soon). I fear making a move might make me work substantially more for not much more comp. However, do you think this is worth it for upward trajectory in PE?
IMO 2.5 years for your first role is enough. I’d think more about whether you like the place you’re exiting to and if there’s clear career paths there as well!
If it’s a good exit with clear upward mobility, go for it! If not, then maybe consider staying at BCG longer, get the promotion, and seek other exits
TAKE IT !!!!!!
How’s comp?
Fixed comp matches that of A3 in my office system, but I get carry, offering a much higher upside.
PE in my country is still incipient and less lucrative than in the US or UK, but compensation-wise I think could be great opportunity. If the fund succeeds, I can stand to earn far more than in consulting.
