Been an insurance defense attorney for 4 yrs about to switch over to PI and open my own firm. I understand that getting cases will be one of the most important factors - what’s your best advice for getting good cases? Any other advice is also welcome!

Put yourself out there. Be shameless. Make sure everyone in your “network” (not just professional) knows you are an injury lawyer. Every Uber you get into give them a card and talk about what you do for a living. You need to get organic referrals this way and since you are brand new to PI this will be your best bet initially.

I think evaluating clients takes time and practice. Eventually you’ll know which cases to take and which to avoid. I bet there are some good CLEs or webinars that discuss opening your own firm and client management.

Started writing some stuff but there’s just too much ground to cover. Feel free to DM me.

Depends on market. D/FW is so saturated that I can imagine it would be very difficult to get your own clients.

Getting cases is about relationships. Screening cases is about experience. There’s no such thing as just getting “good cases.” If you learn how to screen all cases and you know how to work them up, you can turn just about any case into a “good case.” Spend some time working for a well-respected lawyer that has tried cases. You’ll learn everything you need to know.

Make sure you look pretty so that ppl want to be your client

I'm a 6th year attorney in NYC. Strictly defense work; started out with the City Law Dept, did a year and a half of med mal/construction, and for past year and a half have been at a well known defense firm working on high exposure construction accident cases. Contemplating taking a couple interviews at plaintiff's firms to see if there is a good fit. Does anyone have any advice on how approach discussions about compensation and what a market level comp package would or should look like?

What's your preference for plaintiff's side? Steady pay at approximately $120k with no bonuses, or a base salary of $70k plus a cut of what you close over a minimum threashold? Midwest-ish market. In both situations, you get a cut of what you bring in.

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

Got pulled from litigating MVAs to help this solo we hired start a med Mal/nursing home practice. 1 year in and it looks like I’m two steps backwards in terms of getting paid because we’re a year or more out from a lot of the fees hitting. I respect the solo a lot, he’s a mentor, but I’ve got kids and I gotta get paid. Trying not to burn bridges, but I can’t wait years to get cut in. Advice?

What’s a good LA or NY business litigation firm and salary to expect? I’m a 2yr with quite frankly a lot of experience across civ rights, PI, excessive force, wrongful death, employment defense, K dispute, corp. structure dispute, professional licensure. Write every kind of brief, appeals, argue motions, take depos. Am the only associate working directly under partner on all cases. In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.
