Managing unmotivated or disengaged people.

Then you have to motivate and engage.

Managing a bunch of insecure overachievers is pretty easy. You just manage their tasks.

Learning to delegate. New managers often have the urge to do something themselves so that it’s faster and higher quality but if you do that too often, you neglect coaching your team, which results in more work later.

Also, the buck stops with you now when you talk to your leadership, so you can’t blame your manager anymore. And blaming analysts/associates as a manager is a losing affair.

Nice are people you’re managing older or younger than you? Curious how that dynamic is as a 24 YO

Teach. It’s your job to help them get to your level.
Don’t hammer them when they make a mistake. Nothing kills team motivation more then a manager/leader that’s makes a mountain out of a mole hill.

Trying to help my sister negotiate her comp, advice appreciated. Context: starting 9mo maternity leave. Got reached out by her bosses from 4y ago (very good experience both ways). Job is perfect match for her skillset. They asked for her expectations, she said 90. They told her range for the job was 90-110. Offer was made at 90 (50M valuation start up). Also got stock option (24k for 4y vesting, valuated at 50k today) Convinced her to negotiate for 110. Is that too late? What arguments to use?

I'm not sure how to reply to them because I have a feeling that my requirement may be out of their range and while I don't want to undercut my value, I also don't want to be cut out of the process because it's an interesting co.
