Before being promoted to CD, did you feel ready? Or was it a leap of faith?

Like having children. You’re never ready.

The hardest thing was learning to let go of the “doing” and focusing on the managerial part. You’ll obviously guide and plus ideas up. Occasionally you may have to jump into the fray and concept last minute, but mostly you’re encouraged to let go of the reins when it comes to creating work yourself.

Agree with the below. But it also depends on where you work. Some places want DO'ers while also managing and directing. Other places may want you solely working as a CD directing the work, presenting, creative strategy, etc... Do you feel like you have a good roadmap to becoming a CD?

The opportunity may come from a job offer.

Yes. For many years.

Consider the Creative Director Course at the Miami Ad School.

Our industry has a lasting blind spot for training new CDs for the major skills shift from mostly creative work to mostly admin, client-facing, and personnel work a CD does.

I just completed that course over the winter. It was really eye opening and helpful. I recommend!

Felt ready for 3-4 years

Networking question here. A retired partner at the firm I used to work out reached out to me recently about attending an afternoon during the week (b4 4/30) with one of his long time clients. The partner and I have kept in touch since I joined my new firm and I feel like his invitation is a great networking opportunity since the client (who I have worked with before) is on a number of boards. Torn as how to request off as an S3. Could materialize to nothing but could be good for reconnecting.

I’m a new patent prosecution associate and unfortunately only just now realized that maybe prosecuting patents isn’t something I want to do long term. I loved copyright (and trademark) in law school, but I have loans to pay off. Should I stick it out in my current role to pay them off before I jump ship to a new practice area or will I be pigeonholed forever to patents if I stay here for 2-3 years?

At what point do you walk away when bosses or team values do not align with your personal values? Boss told me I’m too soft and I should be prepared to burn bridges if it’s a good outcome for company.

I’m in this business to cure my inferiority complex. Making lots of money, working with fortune 500 clients and walking the streets of NYC with a suit, tie and briefcase makes me feel important and worthy.

I often wish I could be like my law school friends who either moved to small towns or have public sector or non profit jobs, wear sweaters and jeans to work and make far less than me, but are happy with their lives, feel a sense of meaning with their work and don’t need external validation.
