I’m a new patent prosecution associate and unfortunately only just now realized that maybe prosecuting patents isn’t something I want to do long term. I loved copyright (and trademark) in law school, but I have loans to pay off. Should I stick it out in my current role to pay them off before I jump ship to a new practice area or will I be pigeonholed forever to patents if I stay here for 2-3 years?

Honestly, any tech related area that doesn’t involve patents. Doing deal work for tech companies, fintech/crypto/blockchain, data privacy, etc. I want to build a skill set that’s conducive to my going in-house and not managing patent filings.

If you find a soft IP role at a law firm wouldn’t you be making the same amount? Don’t see how that would affect loan repayment. If you’re talking about moving to an entertainment boutique, yes you should expect to make less money. I do think moving sooner rather than later will make it easier to transition to soft IP, so consider making the move at a big firm first before going to a smaller shop.

What is the difference between a Software Engineer I and II? When do you know you're ready to leave your first great SE job? Is there a way to get more money without leaving? My manager always says I'm doing well and I got promoted from SE I to SE II a few months back. They came back to me shortly after that saying they were inviting me to a superday next week for all 3 positions. If anyone knows what the next steps are, I’d appreciate any info or insight. Additional Posts in Entertainment Law

Currently work in-house for a luxury house of fashion brands in NYC and want to make a move to a law firm focused on media, entertainment, technology. I currently handle commercial transactions in the marketing/advertising space (e.g., production, talent, licensing agreements). What firms would you recommend that I target? I am open to all sizes so long as the firm is highly rated and reputable.

Any insight would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
