British airways seems to have the most availability for upgrade space, basically if you can buy an award ticket in biz, it’ll be upgradeable with avios (their currency ).
IMO even though their fuel surcharges are high, they still usually have availability for a close- in business ticket to Europe even in the summer if you’re flexible and some routes that fly the a380 still give you a decent chance at flying business since there are 100 seats. I think an upgrade in the summer from Prem Econ to biz would be 20k avios + $300 or so.
Avios you can transfer from cap one , Amex , and Chase. Ba also has a credit card that gives you 100k avios rn, a companion certificate for award flights, and 10% off round trips originating in the states.
Avios are flexible, but for some people, paying $500 In fuel surcharge +50k points for a one way biz ticket NYC-LON is a real turn off.
AA if you upgrade with miles you’re paying a $350 copay + 25k miles or so. And they get real screwy with “dynamic pricing “ for their awards, so you’d usually need a service like expert flyer to find availability.
Thanks so much for detailed reply. I will check what “expert flyer” is. And will look into Alaska to British transfer. I am ok paying $500 if that means better availability for upgrades.
You can’t transfer Alaska miles to Ba to use for upgrades, but you 100% can use Alaska miles to book flights on BA.
