Approach a senior copywriter at work. In the meantime, here is your first tip: Avoid redundancies by using a Thesaurus. The one built into Mac OS should suffice.
Subscribing to the thread. My experience - ask people you think are smart for some of their time and prepare thoughtful conversation-provoking questions. Sometimes people who are very smart have poor social skills :)
@C1 I'm trying to improve upon the quality of my book so I may eventually qualify for the jobs I aspire to attain.
OP, that's what your CD is for. If your CD isn't cutting the mustard, you need to ask to work with a different one.
If you're willing, you can post a link to your book in this thread, but you better have a thick skin.
Approach a CD you think is smart. Look for one who has experience leading the work you want to do and introduce yourself through LinkedIn, twitter or their email if it's on their site. In the first conversation, be honest about looking to improve your book and ask if they'd be open to working with you and reviewing it. Be yourself and be honest. As other threads recently have shown, most people enjoy helping when young hungry creatives ask.
OTB, Old Man Bars, Public Restrooms...
If there's anyone senior you admire at work take them for a coffee and tell them how you feel. Unless they are a total c*nt they will take you under thier wing and things will change in the right direction. You don't need to 'design/visualise' your ideas to sell them just get to them in front of the right people and use your mentor to bounce off and learn craft.
Boyyy I'm smarter than that. I'll cry like a toddler if I get eviscerated in a fishbowl thread.
Maybe look up portfolios/contacts of the CDs whose work caught your eye?
Not sure where you moved or what your financial situation is, but it would be best to sign up for a good class at The Creative Circus or something. At the very least, you need to read "Hey,Whipple, Squeeze This" by Luke Sullivan. I consider it to be my bible, and he's a great writer.
I can't imagine any good CD would have the time to help you out.
After you have some good, strong ideas, pay a good art director to comp everything up. Or just take a class that pairs you with an art director and come up with great ideas together.
I'm in New York. I went to school for advertising, my book just was meh. I know I have what it takes to create good, strong concepts. It's just mocking them up and presentation that would be far easier with a partner.
@OP if your ideas are good idea to be mocked up, I would find an AD student to put it together.. or even hire one if you're desperate
Is c1 the infamous mustard Nebraska bandit
Am I infamous? Awesome. Yes, I'm moving to Nebraska. I guess I have mustard on my mind.
If you work at R/GA, reach out to R/GA University for a mentor.
I want CD 1 to be my mentor. People here might dislike him, but he sure knows what makes people tick.
Here's my theory: We all know or have known many smart people we could learn from. The difference is, a mentor will be the one you can't help but listen to. Or to put it another way, you respect what they have to say. Once you find someone who earns your respect on this level, you've found your mentor, and you should go all in.
👆🏻Good point. I have horrible social skills, yet a wealth of knowledge, not only about writing, but about life and mustard.
You're right. The problem is that I'm not currently at an agency. It's a little complicated, but I recently moved and I'm doing freelance at the moment.
