For companies running calendar fiscal years, they will have seen a lot of movement from the people who had to stay through 12/31 to be bonus eligible. That is a driver of job postings and may be a cause of the flood in Q1.
On the other hand, the current administration absolute insanity around tariffs that are f*****g up global trade is causing a lot of companies with supply chains outside the US (including US manufacturing organizations who rely on imports for parts that cannot be produced to a quality/price that is needed to meet the market demand of US consumers) is causing a massive amount of concern amongst US companies who will pause hiring until they can see a more positive outlook. Maybe when the short positions of the billionaires in charge are closed and they can start buying up distressed assets? Who knows.
I’ve noticed the slowdown too. Q1 felt like we were gaining some traction, but I think the chaos of the market has created a lot of quiet on my end as well. I'm really hoping it's not like this the next 4 years, but it's definitely making me nervous.
You're feelings are not imagined at all. I have several friends who have been looking for new roles for over a year and can't seem to find anything. This is definitely a challenging time to be looking for something new. I would suggest trying to get a referral if you can.
I haven't heard anything about announced hiring freezes. But I would not be shocked if they were already in place. The trade war damage is going to be substantial, and if the warnings about the US being pushed into a recession prove true, things will get grim. It makes sense that companies would be hesitant to increase their payroll with so much uncertainty on the horizon.
Companies are being pickier than usual when it comes to hiring. Hopefully this doesn't last and we’ll go back to being a employee market
