Can anyone share their experience moving from Big 4 tax to Big Law tax?

I went the other way. For those who have made the move, they typically had worked in M&A, International or Transfer Pricing. Focus was on documentation, structuring or drafting memorandums and opinions. In Big 4, you can’t draft legal documents, so the focus is on reviewing/commenting. Harder to make the the move if you’re in a compliance focused practice like asset wealth management or fed tax.

What specifically about the experience would you like to know?

Personally, moving from big 4 to big law tax was the best professional decision I have made so far. I feel like my knowledge/skills go much further in a law firm setting.

I have got an email from a recruiter that she’ll be sending my CV to the hiring manager. Can someone please help me understand the recruiting process for S&O lead role? From a previous post, I understand that there will be following interviews:

Screening
Role related
Case
Googlyness
Cognitive ability

What is the content of these interviews? What do they look for? How can I prepare? I don’t have much technology my background, so a little worried going into the interview. Any advice please?

Hi Everyone,

At the moment I'm a procurement consultant in London, but want to make a move towards supply chain consulting. My preference would go out to a supply chain consulting role which is more analytically challenging. Do you have any advice on how to make the transition (e.g. firms which would help me transition or courses to upskill myself before applying)?

How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.

She says I should take it as a compliment, but the only thing I feel is disgust that I now have to look forward to guys only wanting me for my body 😔

I'm currently completing a tax LLM (as a foreign trained lawyer) but considering pursuing a JD. I'd like to do it part-time while working. Which firm/service line gives me the best chance to do both? Also, is part-time Big4 work even a thing?

Any other junior tax lawyers here feeling discouraged by how steep the learning curve is? 🥲 I started remotely too and training has not been the best…

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Firms I’m considering: Latham, Gibson, Sidley, Goodwin, Milbank. Thank you all!
