Austin for years was a much smaller city dominated by state government and UT. The tech scene has brought explosive growth to the city and it is embracing its "Silicon Hills" identity. By far the most progressive, "hip" and "artsy" Texas major city, probably also the most expensive and youngest. The legal market is smaller than Houston and Dallas and harder for outsiders to break in. Lots of outdoor activities and on the edge of Hill country.
Dallas --- Along with Houston is one of Texas two major cities. It's economy is probably the most diverse of Texas cities and has large F&I, tech, and logistics industries. Has more of a cosmopolitan feel. People in other Texas cities often make fun of Dallas for being very status obsessed, but the stereotype is overused. Flat and boring grasslands.
Simply put, Austin is overrated and overpriced, which is evident from the drastic price correction in the Real estate . It had its sizzle because of tech start ups but that has died down after COVID.
If you are here for a couple of years, go with Austin. If you are “settling down” go with DFW. Cost of living, school system, etc…
I second this!^
Something to also consider is traffic, commute times, and tollways...
I'm in Addison, North Dallas Area, and can jump on the Dallas North Tollway, 635, 75, and George Bush in 10-13 minutes OR LESS, assuming its not raining and not rush hour...
**Texans forget how to drive in the rain and it makes me a little road ragey :) ** prepare yourself!
Austin? Your commute and lack of infrastructure/ tollways, more exits, really they just need more roads in general. So when commuting in Austin, double or even triple your commute time for no rain & no rush hour traffic.
What’s missing in all this: Austin is WILDLY non-diverse.
Dallas is pretty diverse too…
Austin is closer to Portland than Dallas, if you catch my drift.
Austin blows azz
Why is that?
I haven’t heard much about what type of lifestyle you’re looking for. You can’t just ask “which one?” when we know nothing about your preferences or situation
Understood. I live in DFW and have a team I visit in Austin from time to time. For me, the two biggest things are cost of living and vibe/demographics. DFW is more affordable, even though there’s plenty of money out here. Austin skews younger and can give a more hipster vibe. That said, there’s more to do (and eat) in Austin. The next two factors for me were pro sports teams and international flight connections, for which I preferred DFW.
Austin is a great city with a lot of appeal especially when you venture out to the surrounding areas (it’s better for outdoor activities like hiking, etc). That said, the population has surged and has greatly outstripped the infrastructure. Austin was not designed for the population that it has now. Want to go out to eat? Expect a wait for every restaurant you can think of. How do you like sitting in traffic? Some of the Austin traffic can be brutal, simply because they don’t have enough highways to move the population around. My son lived in Austin for a year and moved back to Dallas because he just couldn’t put up with all the headaches of day-to-day living there.
