Can I brag about something I’m really proud of?

This summer there was a sale on First Book for LGBT books, so I decided I was going to create a collection of titles that students at my school could borrow. Every book in the white bookshelf of the attached picture is LGBT, ready and waiting for the student that might need it.

What is First Book?

First Book Marketplace is a site that sells books to teachers at a huge discount. You have to prove you work at a school first, but it’s pretty simple to navigate. And they do events like the PRIDE thing I used to get these books.

You've got some great selections there! I read All Boys Aren't Blue this past Summer and it was excellent!

If buy the partners you work with regularly a holiday gift, how much do you spend? Usually I get baked goods or food items which you can’t tell the actual amount spent on. This year, though, I’d like to support local restaurants by encouraging people to order takeout—hence, giving gift cards.

How much is appropriate for a restaurant gift card from an associate to a partner?

This past week I got an envelope hand delivered to me by a student I do not teach. In it was a trans pin she had bought for me, as well as a drawing and a letter of thanks.

Again, this is not my student, but I think this speaks to the power of visibility. Students need to know we are members of society. All I did was wear my own trans pin and “love is love” pin on my lanyard, and my trans flag mask (occasionally).

But for that student it was enough.
