I was generally worried when I taught in very a rural school, but I was fortunate to get permission from my administrators to teach about Gender and Sexuality in my Humanities class. Now I am open about incorporating identity into my class discussions as a teacher in a more urban area!
Our district just adopted the HRC Foundation Welcoming Schools. Professional development providing training and resources to create LGBTQ and gender inclusive schools. It’s a great start and everyone so far is on board with district full support.

An uncomfortable co teacher
I recently bought this great new book, We Are Everywhere, about the history of the LGBTQ community. I teach history and at my rural school don't feel comfortable talking about it unfortunately.
I got a new job though in what I hope will be a more accepting district!
so many wonderful LGBT texts that I still run from. But that's OK. I can still sneak in Tennessee Williams, Janes Baldwin, Edna St Vincent Millay, and two other dozens besides. And they'll have to pry my copy of Truman Capote's OTHER VOICES OTHER ROOMS from my cold, dead, gay hands!
