Can you share your experience working with a mentor? How did it help in your career? Just trying to understand and level set expectations. Askimg this as a mentee.

I had a mentor who believed in me implicitly until I showed I was out of my depth. Their belief in me drove me to not let them down and somewhere in that drive I learned a lot of the subject matter I was new to. That dynamic really helped in my growth and I really owe a lot of my professional development to this individual.

I have never once seen a formal mentoring relation add value . It becomes a check the box exercise

The truth is - mentors usually need to spot some potential before they invest their time and goodwill on a mentee . Once they are invested , things work great

I have two wonderful female mentors (I am female so appreciate this even more) , who happened to be assigned by the firm when I joined. The relationship goes both ways. I attribute the success of our relationship to my proactiveness in reaching out and scheduling touchpoints although we live in separate states. There was a little bit of luck involved as one of them recruited me to my first project at the firm and I had weekly in-person facetime with her.
They both support me and give me sound advice on which opportunities will help me move my career forward, one of them represents me in annual reviews and is always completely transparent and honest about the process, and they are both there any time I need or want to ask them anything, and make me feel comfortable reaching out.
Prime examples of shining star mentors!

I attribute a lot of my success due to my first mentor. She believed in me and pushed me to always be better. She put a lot of opportunities in front of me which were not readily available for someone who had my job position at the time. It really let me fail safely and grow from all of these opportunities.

Why are you trying to level set expectations as the mentee? Are you expecting something of a mentor? The relationship should be organic and there really shouldn’t be any “expectations” per se.

Depends. My official firm-appointed mentor basically just shepherds me through promotion and review committees, not much of an emotional bond but a professional relationship built upon mutual trust that I deeply appreciate. My unofficial mentor is who I turn to when I discuss much more personal issues, e.g. taking a LOA due to family issues. He's more of a coach who really knows me personally.
Do you have a firm-appointed/ official mentor or a more personal mentor?

Not a firm appointed mentor. I wanted to approach someone whom I look up to and have them mentor me from a career perspective and not personal.

I’ve only had one experience so far and it was bad. The individual ended up in the leading position by chance (by his own admission) and didn’t like his role, but didn’t want to move out laziness (also by his own admission). It was a formally assigned mentorship, so maybe I’d had a better experience when selecting someone on my own, someone I could look up to.

Hello fellow fishes, currently I am working as an Information Security Consultant and wanted to switch my career into Cloud Security.

I have around 6+ years of experience in Information Security which includes ISO 27001, NIST CSF, SOC 2 and PCI DSS.
I have also done some cloud certifications such as AZ-900, AZ-500, AWS Specialty Security and currently preparing for CCSK and CCSP.
Can anyone provide with any suggestions through which I can switch my career.

I currently work as an APM at a FAANG company but recently received an offer to join an MBB. I’m very excited about the role but didn’t realize I’d need to take a pay cut when I applied (~100k base + ~20k bonus + ~60k equity vs. 90k base + 10-20k bonus). Considering that I currently work 40-60 hours/week, I’ll be making significantly less per hour at the MBB. I’m very interested in the opportunity but also don’t want to make a poor financial decision early in my career. Thank you for your time!

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
