If you’re with a big firm - get the offer then talk to the LCP / Partner on your project. You don’t want them getting in between you and the offer.
This is worse than poaching.

I wouldn’t say anything till I get an offer. I told my firm once and the following week it was like a committed a murder.
Get offer in writing
You will have to let them know before signing the offer just to be on the safe side since this directly relates to SOW and money between the firm and client is involved.
What do you make now?
You may be selling yourself short.
There’s a formal process, but I’ve never seen a firm block something like this (even though they could technically do so), especially over someone at the Senior Associate level.
I recently made this move - the client notified my projects lead partner that they were interested in interviewing me. Stirred up a shit storm but ultimately I shared w/ my internal leadership team that I’m happy where I’m at but I’d hear the client out and then came back to the partner when I received the offer. I would never go to the team until a formal offer is on the table - offers fall through all the time and given the market you probably want to keep your head down. My guess is your non-compete would come into play if you moved to a competitor not to industry and even then they are hardly ever upheld unless you’re a sr leader.

The plan is for me to take the work in-house that my firm is being paid for now and reduce our SOW with the firm is why I ask the non-compete question.

This will definitely burn that bridge to the ground. Just be aware of that.

Yeah you need to get sign off on this
Look at your company rules, it's very likely you'll have to disclose it. Don't worry no one is gonna block you or anything (they wouldn't piss a client off)
I have done this before, but discussed with both parties before starting the process. Luckily for me, I had great relationship on both sides and they both cared about doing what is right for me. Agreed not to pursue non-compete clause as an exception.
At the senior associate level, you are most likely fine. Having the client update the SOW to remove the work that you do because you are now going to do it in-house is a whole different can of worms that I’m not so certain about
