Honestly it doesn't sound like the type of company you want to stay at in the long run. I would have stuck it out and tried to improve things as much as possible until the baby arrives. Then I would look for other jobs while on parental leave so I wouldnt have to go back there.
I’m learning that it’s very much a compliance and consensus culture. And I’ve come from quite driven organisations which fits with our type of category. This place is totally different. Decisions don’t get made, it’s super democratic and it’s all about protecting people’s sensitive feelings. I’m originally from NL 🇳🇱 so this is such a hard cultural shift for me.
Gosh this feels eerily similar to a startup I was at in NYC whose homebase was in Europe. Leave asap.
Would love to hear what happened with you. It’s not all bad. The people are lovely. I’ve never worked in such a warm, friendly culture. Plus there’s no egos, the office is really chill and well-designed, the commute is easy from daycare. My direct report is fantastic. I’m learning lots about dysfunction although I’m not really stretching any of my skills. I took the job after a layoff but it seemed so great at interview but of course I never thought to ask how financially functional they were and I didn’t realise that the people I met in my interview were actually really not as skilled, driven or as experienced as I thought.
Mostly, I don’t know why the founder talked to me about building a department and improving the capability of [my area] when clearly he just wants to bail out the day-to-day with business as usual work. They have been in business for 11 years and only started turning a profit this year and not much 🤯 the founder told me he wants to open a new office in a different location but how!?
Why don’t you start looking for a new job and hopefully you’ll get one before April, if not, you know you’ll resign at the end of your leave.
Like do I just stick it out because I’m going to have a baby in April? Do I try to fix it? In summary: they said that they wanted an exec leader to build IP, innovation and credibility in my dept. Reality = day-to-day chaos means they actually just seem to want a do-er to churn through any work they get.
Yes you stick it out if you’re having a baby in April. I don’t even need to read the rest.
Proceed with extreme caution. Utilize your soft skills like reading the room, listening with intention and only asking questions in a large group setting in necessary. Don’t try to prove yourself until your have too
Good luck
But I do have to prove myself at 5 months in. And need to build relationships, however I keep asking questions about basic things and finding out they know very little.
