Thanks for creating this. I’ve done a lot of work on my house (rewired the electrical for most of it, redid all the plumbing - waste and supply, drywall, flooring, bathroom reno). Happy to share experiences, offer advice or at least point people in the right direction.
Thanks for your interest! I’m looking for some advice on alexa vs google for home automation
I went with Alexa and found it to be ok. I use it mainly to control lights around my house so I would say that I’m it really using it to it’s full potential. I can’t comment on Google but Alexa does seem to have a lot of skills that provide you with pretty broad coverage across services and devices.
Thanks. I want to control drapes, locks, music, and thermostat. Seems like there are basically two ecosystems and they really don’t talk to each other
For lights if you pair the Alexa with Phillips Hue it works well. There were a few times I had to reprogram them for no real reason but other than that it’s been pretty solid. The August locks work pretty well with Alexa but also require a bridge to get working. For music - not sure if you use Sonos but I think their latest equipment pairs in Alexa as well. Drapes I have no experience with. I think Nest thermostats work will Alexa too but probably better integration with Google.
Yeah I heard that next year nest was going to stop working with Alexa. What do you think of smart things? Seems like you can just use that has a hub and connect it all. I’m not sure what benefit it gives you over just connecting directly
I looked at Smart Things back when it first came out but didn’t think it was ready at the time. It also did t have voice capabilities (at least not that I can remember) at the time. That also partly factored into my decision but quite honestly it still feels a bit gimmicky on any platform. It only takes a couple seconds longer to use an app on your phone if it’s nearby
Thanks for that. We are looking for bathroom vanities now. Looked at Home Depot and it’s all junk. Looked at a specialty store and it’s 5x the price. Is there anything in between?
Believe it or not - Costco has a somewhat decent selection. It also includes the sink in most cases and shipping/tax is all included. We got one for our downstairs bathroom several years ago and it’s held up very well. I found the quality to be better than Home Depot. There are a couple other places but I need to check with my wife. Will post that info here once I have it.
Nice. We love Costco. And have had furniture from there that’s pretty comfortable and stylish. We will take a look
There’s a better selection online as I don’t think they carry much in store. But that may vary by location
