I have found one weekly assignment to be the best and it includes all review skills, nothing new that we just learned that day/week. This year I am trying to add a "cheat sheet" to go home to parents explaining the skills we are learning so they can feel more confident in helping their kids too.
I moved away from daily homework. If I give them skills to practice they usually have the week to complete it. Allows flexibility since they have busy after school schedules. This worked very well this past year.
we don't use this for homework but it's great spiral: onestopteachershop on tpt they have a full year of math, both editable and non https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/5th-Grade-Math-Spiral-Review-5th-Grade-Math-Homework-ENTIRE-YEAR-786715
I use that in the classroom as review. I actually start a grade level below to help fill any missing gaps and then move the kids ahead as necessary. We call it stars since they earn a star for completing it. It is also a great time for mini lessons.
I would only go over a few problems a day to avoid using a lot of class time. What you could do is let specific students know that you will call on them the next day to answer questions. Use the fairness to call on students and that way they don’t know who it will be
