Curious how often others take interviews when they’re not actively job hunting. I really like my current role (the team is great and the work-life balance is superb) but growth is limited, and I know I could earn more elsewhere. Challenges are that interviews can be draining, and there’s always the risk of word getting back through industry connections. How do you all approach this? Do you take interviews occasionally just to explore, or only when you're seriously considering a move?

That's an interesting question. Honestly, I've never pursued interviews when I wasn't actively and aggressively looking for work. For one, I have anxiety, and the fear of getting "found out" by a workplace that I like is stressful for me. But also, like you said, the whole process is exhausting. I tend to only start looking when I'm ready to move on. I don't think there's any problem with taking the occasional interview, especially if the job seems really promising.

That makes a lot of sense. The stress and time commitment can definitely outweigh the benefits if you're not seriously looking. I agree, being selective about when to interview seems like a smart approach.

I used to take interviews now and then just to stay sharp and see what’s out there, but in this job market I'm not even getting invited to do interviews really. Makes me really happy that I'm feeling good in my current role. I'd be open to interviewing for practice in the future, but with how many people I know looking for jobs right now, I'd feel bad just taking the time away from someone who's unemployed and really looking hard.

That’s a really thoughtful perspective. It’s great that you’re feeling good in your current role, and agreed in this market, being mindful about the opportunity and who might need it more is important.

Only lately I’ve gotten back to keeping my eyes open to what else is out there. Also comfortable where I’m at, there are some shortcomings, but overall I can’t complain much. I don’t want to be stuck somewhere, heavily weighing how important a jump into the unknown might be though.

I like your approach - staying open to new opportunities without rushing. I think that’s a smart way to keep options open without losing sight of what’s working now.

I do. I'm picky about the interviews I take because there is no point in wasting my own time or theirs if there is no possibility I would take it. I think it's important to be open to new opportunities though, even if you like your current job. You never know when something even better might come along.

I completely agree - being selective but open to new opportunities feels like the best balance. You’re right, sometimes the right role comes along when you least expect it!
