Current BigLaw tax associate. Would going to a big4 M&A group for a couple of years make me more attractive for in-house jobs? How about if I spent a couple years in Big4 international or SALT?

Because you want to due diligence all day? I’d only leave big law for a big4 national tax practice.

I am—good to know, thanks!

No unless you want to do compliance. That is, be in the tax group instead of legal.

If you want to just go in-house generally (i.e., a fund or F500), unlikely (unless, possibly, you’re at a crappy BL firm). Ultimately, your exit will typically match your experience - fund formation, PE M&A, credit, RE, international. Not sure there’s a reason to pivot to B4 (though the experience is really great (possibly better than certain BL firms) in certain groups) unless you wanted to develop a particular skill set to leverage for in-house and this may be speculative.

Fed/Sub K/international M&A. They have different names in the B4, but those provide broad transactional experience. Again, if you had a crystal ball on how you’d exit, you might prefer one of those groups over the others. Some WNT groups are good (support the groups I mentioned), but their practice can be very narrow.

Not really. You will only be more attractive for Tax Manager (e.g., tax planning) roles, which are roles that require a JD or CPA. They pay less (and are not drafting focused) than Tax Counsel (JD required) roles which you can get leaving a law firm. Would also depend on the type of tax you did in a law firm. Transaction Tax and Partnership tax can get you in to a PE bank or hedge fund; international for a multinational corp.

As a biglaw tax associate you be a good canditate for an inhouse job as tax counsel on the tax team - not legal. Hard to get on legal team without corporate experience.

Do you set up any standards when you date with anybody? I’m currently dating with a Mexican man. He is older than me 10 years old (I thought 6 when we first met). His job is construction and made less than me. He is insecure about the money but I’m not really. But, the one bothering me is that he is illegal immigrant. Other than that, He is a cure, nice and independent guy. When dating, he split money/ or want to cover for me. He cares about people around. I am happy but not sure about LT.

Hi All, I am 11 yoe, working at a medium sized product company and I got an offer from Thoughtworks (50% hike) for a Lead Consultant role in data engineer profile.

Being a mother, I have anxiety and nervousness about joining a service based company bcoz of doubts below.
1. Job security, considering the upcoming recession is it safe to join TW at this time?
2. How good is WLB at TW for a Lead Consultant? Approx working hours on a daily basis?
3. How flexible is TW for WFH?

Please suggest

Does anyone else just not even want to be a people manager anymore?! The amount of work this is taking, I’m just so over it. In addition to them piling on my work (which is a full time job) the people management stuff is just as much a full time job that no one in management seems to take into account. I have tried countless times to explain this but I end up burnt out, everyone suffers including me. I just left one role bc of it and now this new role, same thing. I’m over it.

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

For anyone who practices tax lit in the US Tax Court, what’s your experience with the independent office of appeals? They don’t seem quite that “independent” to me and so far, I’ve only had one appeals officer who seemed knowledgeable and nice. It’s been a real headache. Interested to hear other people’s experience.

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?
