People focus really heavily on "side hustles" and neglect they could've made more at their actual job. For example, she admits she lost out on $8,000/yr in negotiating her new position. In my opinion, she didn't do enough prep (e.g., talking to other people in the company, finding specific comparables within the industry/area) and have her talking points properly lined up for that role change when she was brushed off by HR.
She also could've considered switching jobs at some point which could've netted her another $20k+/yr in that job change. Considering they eventually gave her incremental raises to about $70,000, the budget was clearly there. I imagine a good medical editor in science communications can reach six figures. Pharma/healthcare/etc is full of money if you're in the right place, which she should be focused on getting to.
At the low level of income the side hustle is generating, (< $10k/yr), it's likely not worth the differential effort unless it scales really well (e.g., you think you can double it, then double it again...). Given the rise of GenAI I am not sure freelance writing is a good future-proof hustle. Content generation is becoming cheap...
