I know a lot of us are in your place. I wanted to be a musician, and every musician I see hurts me. To be honest, I get very jealous of almost every one of them, and then I feel worse for being nothing but a jealous little girl. What changed for me was to be so aware of what I do have - what I DO get to eat, what relationships I DO have, what celebrations I DO get to be a part of. The only way out, at least for me, was to adopt and practice this lifestyle. Maybe in this lifetime, we didn't get to spend our lives the way we wanted to, but at least we got to live. It's on us to make sure we live it with more moments of joy than regret and remorse.
You are not missing out being a musician, I once was a musician but then I decide to choose different path but pursue music as a passion.
Yes feeling the exact same way in being pigeon-holed in my industry and don’t know how to show my skills are very transferable. Trying to look on the bright side where i still have a job and can work on skills and networking to pivot. If you want to start your own business maybe you can create a business plan and pitch it.
What is your passion? What do you like to do? I enjoy crafting, sewing and knitting. Find a hobby or subject that lights you up and ease into it. You may meet people with the same interests and at least you make new friends. At the most you find introductions and potentially new opportunities. But you’ll have fun and something to look forward to. Who knows? It could turn into a lucrative side gig. I enjoy making quilts and have gifted the few I made to relatives. However, I see opportunities for selling them as a side gig.
I think I have reinvented myself several times over the last 20 odd years of working. Switching takes time and a plan. I would suggest networking with folks about the other profession and see if it would be a good fit for your current life either as a primary career or as a hobby/passion.
For example, there are plenty of stories about late in their career transitions think Kentucky fried chicken or famous authors.
But those transitions were years in the making and giving up something (like free time) to complete.
So definitely dream. And then definitely start looking at plans to move forward.
