Depends on the product and the team. What you do when you’re on call varies wildly too.
It's normal. What "on-call" means hours-wise will vary. Non-critical system fails a build at 10pm on a weekend? Eh, fix it Monday. The company's primary source of revenue drops offline at 10am on a Tuesday? You might get a call even if you're not on call.
I know that there are many teams at Amazon that go on call during normal busy times - Black Friday, Prime Day, etc.
It's often part of the job. Even if the system is SRE assisted. It's not that terrible, and in most cases you have time to intervene. For some it's not mandatory and you can be paid extra as well.
Yes, for the code that my team owns directly. It rotates I think by week and two people per team are on call. If the first person doesn't answer it goes to the second. That being said, it's really only used for critical issues. In the 3.5 years I've been here I don't think I've ever actually been called when I've been on-call.
