Most larger conpanies require a degree in engineering, often in a specific field of study. Have you thought about going back to obtain a degree?
I just think it really depends what type of engineer you want to be. If you want to be licensed, then I would recommend looking into getting your EIT, and PE. These certifications require a degree OR x amount of years of experience. Those are typically the requirements to get a stamp and have your names on the drawings. (Having a PE is much more attractive for employers when job hunting)
But if a PE is something you don’t want to peruse you could always just look for designer roles. As a designer you design projects and have a licensed engineer sign your drawings. Some larger companies have several position under “engineer” that do roughly the same thing as an engineer. I think it’s fairly easier to get a job as a designer with field experience and no degree.
Most designers/engineers have a lot of drafting experience as well.
I think starting in a drafter/designer role is a good idea. Once you get the hang of everything get your EIT and PE and move up.
I started off as a drafter, got experience of engineering and moved up as a designer. No degree in engineering. Currently an EIT/PE is not something I’m interested in pursuing but maybe in the years to come I might take a stab at it.
