I always do since it doesn't roll over in my state. I learned that the hard way my first year on the job. I make a point to use all of it now. Most of it goes toward real vacations, and the rest for random personal days throughout the year.
When I was hired I tried negotiating for a bit more pay but ended up getting a few extra PTO days as a compromise. We've since switched to unlimited but you KNOW I try to take full advantage of that program knowing I went the route of trading in PTO for the Salary when I was hired.
We have unlimited, but yes. I’m very strict with myself on taking time off. I try and set my days at the beginning of the year because I know it’ll hold me accountable (otherwise same, I don’t take them and then lose them).
That being said, your manager’s response feels quite inappropriate. Your time off is part of your compensation package and assuming you have no other teammates off, it feels insane that they’d deny PTO because you all have projects. And to make you prioritize your wellbeing vs work feels unhealthy to me
exactly. I probably need to do a better job of mapping them out at the beginning of the year admittedly. This year might just be what it is at this point but I'm going to try and take a better approach next year.
I take every single hour of my PTO. I earn it so I am going to take it. Having work-life balance is really important to me.
Agree. Its part of your compensation package at the end of the day. You earn it. You use it.
