As someone who has worked at other agencies and interviewed with Edelman on my resume, I would agree that’s the reputation. “Edelman excellence” is a thing. It’s a prestigious firm. My experience has been great - mostly brilliant, kind people and good opportunities.
Seconded.
Been at Edelman a few years and all my colleagues who have left the firm have gone on to amazing gigs. Many of our clients are former Edelman. Since I joined, my LinkedIn inbox messages from recruiters have increased exponentially. I’m not quite ready to leave until I reach a certain level but it’s safe to say, Edelman opens doors. Ignore posts about “toxic” culture—the firm is what you make of it. Every time I’ve thought about quitting, I have been able to work with my manager to get a new opportunity internally that gives me the challenge or experience I need. If you’re independent and self motivated Edelman is a great place.
I think it’s perfectly normal to like your job but also be open to and interested in new experiences. And at Edelman, I’ve found that I have been able to find a way to gain those experiences here instead when I see something tempting. I wouldn’t call myself “True blue” as I’m certainly continuing to keep a pulse on what’s out there... but honestly no other opportunities provide a “total package” that has made it worth it to leave. Eg they might pay higher but have less PTO or no flexibility too WFH (not really relevant now!), or the clients aren’t as good. I think people who hate working at a company and spend their time going on apps to complain rather than have productive conversations or find new jobs should take a hard look at why their experience is “toxic”.

I love how it’s all Edelman people saying yes lol. I’d agree though it’s a prestigious agency, I think there are a few others with holding companies that would offer equal weight or opportunity. The major plus with Edelman isn’t necessarily that it’s better than other top agencies work wise but that it ISN’T in a holding company.
Having edelman on your resume does open doors if you’ve stuck it out there 3-5 years. Very strong alumni network
The name has recognition but it’s not worth the toxic environment. Not sure having it on my resume has truly opened any doors, but will say the network and alum network is vast.
same as E9! largely positive experience over 6.5 years. Some bad apples - but those are everywhere
Um. Every single agency thinks that about themselves. The concept of “prestige” is at best a moving target in an industry built on self-congratulatory practices to help justify inflated billings that never trickle down to the people doing the work.
Goldman Sachs is respected across industry and profession. Edelman, while great, is a comms shop and simply does not (and cannot) carry that same weight. Again, top PR firm? Absolutely but not at same prestige level as GS no matter how much Richard might think it is or trips to Davos he takes.
Edelman seems to recruit and produce smart, capable, strategic talent more so than other firms who shield junior people from any semblance of communications strategy or serious client relations.
Hellllll no.
I started my career at Edelman and I believe it opened doors for me. Honestly regret leaving.
Where did you leave for?
Hmmm. I think it may have that external reputation, but I'm not sure it's fully deserved. There are many bright, talented people here. But there are also tons of useless people who simply stick around by playing the game well. It may be the Goldman Sachs of PR, mainly as GS is similarly toxic and sporadic. But no way is it the McKinsey of PR, where in McKinsey everyone is a rock star.
definitely think that’s true. People are always extremely interested in my edelman experience - and i have had a largely fantastic experience over the last six years minus a bad manager or two
The Goldman Sachs prestige... so you mean the insider trading issues, manipulation of foreign countries’ economies, supporting dictators, contributing to the 2008 financial crisis, gender bias issues?!
I’ve worked at agencies of all sizes and if large works for you, then Edelman is one of a few that could hold that title. However, global agencies have their cons and I’d advise you to not pick your agency based on its name alone. Agency name recognition is great for resume building but it’ll always be your actual experience and the client work you were a part of developing that’ll open the most doors in the long run.
Started my career out of grad school at Edelman and was there 4+ years. Definitely opened doors to my subsequent roles.
I’d think new biz at Edelman would be easier. You likely get lots of opps and RFPs. Is that true? Harder to just get stuff inbound if your firm isn’t as well-known.
But to answer your question, yes lots of inbound opps (to the point we have minimums on the $$ we pursue). but, E5 is right that a lot of time is spent on these opps that we don’t win because of cost (especially new clients who don’t know our rates and we don’t discount for).
