Do you tell your bank when you travel, or just wing it and hope for the best? I used to assume everything would be fine—until my card got declined in Vietnam and I had to borrow cash from a hostel roommate I’d met that morning. Since then, I’ve become super cautious, adding travel notices and carrying a backup card just in case. But I’ve also heard that some banks don’t even require notifications anymore. What’s your approach—play it safe or roll the dice?

If your bank still needs travel notices in 2025, switch banks. It’s not your job to do their fraud prevention work—and any financial institution that freezes your card abroad is useless.

I've not had issues. I think 2 or 3 years ago when I called to make sure my card got locked they told me to not even bother.

My bank app allows me to flag that I am traveling in my account settings - but yes this is always a good thing to follow up on, trying to call customer service in a foreign country can be expensive and problematic.

I tell the local gas station, dry cleaners and pizza place if I’ll be traveling. You can’t be too sure.

I wing it. Only have issues if the purchase amount is over $300

Yes, there are a lot of uncertainties when traveling. I have encountered similar situations before and it feels troublesome. Now I usually send a travel notice to the bank, and they think my transaction is abnormal. However, I have also started using digital wallets, which does make it much more convenient for me. With digital wallets, I can directly exchange currency locally without worrying about the card being rejected. This is not only flexible, but also avoids the risk of carrying a large amount of cash. Have you tried using a digital wallet?

Will Amex restricting guess access for Centurion Lounge actually make any difference?

I can see short term changes but the way Amex has been aggressively marketing Platinum card, we just will have overcrowding of primary card holders 🤷🏻‍♂️

What's next, everyone has to spend min. 50k a year to get Centurion lounge access or pay per visit.
