Do you think companies should handle layoffs more thoughtfully? A friend was on PTO in Europe when she got notified about layoffs. She was safe, but her whole team was let go, and their access was cut immediately, and she didn’t even get to say goodbye. Should companies show more empathy and care in these situations? What's your perspectives?

They definitely should have more empathy. Layoffs that are handled poorly affect morale and build an environment of added fear.

Definitely and it's particularly true in the current environment.

Unfortunately there are many HR/legal reasons why they have to handled this way and the impacted employee is most likely receiving a severance which puts further immediate restrictions on access and communication with others

Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea severance could be a reason for immediate cutting access. But from what I’ve heard, some companies don’t even offer severance and blame the layoffs on performance. Funny enough, even some top performers got cut. Makes you wonder how they’re really making these decisions.

I think at the very least people should be told in person where possible, and 1-on-1. Not via email or via a group zoom call

Do you think it matters who the one-on-one is with? For me, I’d want it to be with the person who made the decision, not just a random HR person I don’t even know.
